The Oregon State city of Burns, with population of about 3000, is the county seat of Harney County. It is also the home of Harney County Fairgrounds, which began in 1924, on whose site stands the Harney County Fair Raceway which was offering pari-mutuel betting opportunities as early as 1933. The 4 furlong oval track offers mostly thoroughbred racing, although they have branched out into quarter horse races occasionally, and benefits from an open air grandstand, offering 3 days of racing towards the end of the Oregon Fair. The racecourse still operates today, with its principal race being the Babe Gibson Memorial.
